Alfred Owles Wall Art

Alfred Owles (Born 1894) was born in the United Kingdom. Owles studied at the Nottingham Academy of Fine Art. He is known for magazine illustrations – aviation and war images, and watercolor painting. He immigrated to the US shortly before the outbreak of World War I. Owles flew with the British Royal Air Force during World War I as an aerial photographer and gunner. It was here that he saw the airplanes of that era in actual warfare, which he so brilliantly expressed in his paintings. It was this experience that was to determine the subject matter of his future paintings. In San Francisco, Owles shared a studio with Wes Carscaden, the noted illustrator. He was also an instructor at Jean Turners Art Center.

He did a series of aircraft paintings during the late 1950s for the Standard Oil Company. The paintings were used in their advertisements in LIFE Magazine. After war I Owles opened a studio in San Francisco. It was in this studio that he did most of his artwork. In 1924 he moved across the Bay to Marin County where he had homes in Novato and Fairfax. During the Second World War years, Owles’ illustrations appeared in Colliers magazines and in Life, Look, Saturday Evening Post. "Satan's Pipe Organ" was the painting that brought him into the limelight. It was a Second World War canvas where he portrayed anti-aircraft guns pointing upwards. During his early career Owles was primarily a watercolorist, specializing in illustrations of airplanes; however, in his later years he painted landscapes of Marin County. He died on May 29, 1978 in Novato.
